Öğe Comparison of itraconazole and terbinafine in the treatment of superficial dermatophyte infections(1995) Hazneci E.; Oram Y.; Yologlu S.Background and design. - In recent years, itraconazole and terbinafine have been widely used in the treatment of superficial fungal diseases. In this study, we aimed to compare the efficacy and side effects of these 2 agents. Seventy eight patients with superficial dermatophyte infection, were given either itraconazol (100 mg/d) or terbinafine (250 mg/d) for two weeks. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated by KOH examination at 30th, 60th and 90th day after cessation of the drug. Side effect profile was decided with patients' complaints and laboratory examinations. Results. - At the end of the study 30 of 39 patients in the itraconazole group and 31 of 39 patients in the terbinafine group, completed the study. There was no statistical difference between the two treatment groups regarding the efficacy of the treatment. Conclusion. - None of the patients described any subjective side effects and all laboratory examination results were either negative or normal. Itraconazole and terbinafine were found to be equally effective in superficial dermatophyte infections.Öğe Comparison of plasma malondialdehyde, glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, hydroxyproline and selenium levels in patients with vitiligo and healthy controls(Medknow Publications and Media Pvt. Ltd, 2008) Ozturk I.; Batcioglu K.; Karatas F.; Hazneci E.; Genc M.Background: The etiology and pathophysiologic mechanism of vitiligo are still unclear. The relationship between increased oxidative stress due to the accumulation of radicals and reactive oxygen species and the associated changes in blood and epidermal component of vitiliginous skin have been reported many times. We investigated the possible changes of plasma malondialdehyde, glutathione, selenium, hydroxyproline and glutathione peroxidase activity levels in patients with vitiligo in order to evaluate the relationship between oxidative stress and etiopathogenesis of vitiligo. Materials and Methods: Plasma malondialdehyde, glutathione, hydroxyproline and glutathione peroxidase activity levels were measured by spectrophotometric methods, and HPLC was used for measurement of selenium concentrations. Results: Our results showed increased malondialdehyde, hydroxyproline and glutathione peroxidase activity levels in plasma of vitiligo group ( P < 0.05). Conclusion: Support of antioxidant system via nonenzymatic antioxidant compounds and antioxidant enzymes may be useful to prevent of melanocyte degeneration which occur due to oxidative damage in vitiligo.Öğe Management of superficial fungal infections in our clinic. A retrospective study(2004) Hazneci E.; Bayram N.; Aki T.; Do?an G.Bacground and Design: Our purpose was to determine the economic and medical aspects of superficial fungal infection treatments, that given in our clinic. Material and Method: A total of 112 patients with clinically proven and treated patients, suffered from superficial fungal infections were surveyed. Clinical types of the infection, microscopic examination results and the given treatments were analyzed. Evidence based updates were made and standard treatments determined for all clinical types of superficial fungal diseases. The treatments were compared with standard treatments. Results: Eighty-five of 112 patients (75.8%) who had been diagnosed as superficial fungal disease were microscopically positive. The chosen managements were two topical antimycotic (%26.2), one topical antimycotic only (%24.2), systemic itraconazole (%23.5) and systemic terbinafine (%21.5). Mostly T.pedis (%52.3), T.unguium (%20.8), T.versicolor (%10.7) and T.inguinalis (%8.7) were seen respectively. Conclusion: We need to ensure that we are treating our patients with the best available agent for their disease.Öğe Three cases of verrucous carcinoma(Blackwell Publishing, 1998) Dogan G.; Oram Y.; Hazneci E.; Özen S.; Karincao?lu Y.; Çiralik H.Verrucous carcinoma of the skin and mucosa is an uncommon clinicopathological variant of low grade squamous cell carcinoma. Here, we present three different clinical types of verrucous carcinoma. The first patient presented with an anogenital verrucous carcinoma, also known as Buschke-Loewenstein tumour. The second patient had verrucous carcinoma of the heel with endophytic growth (i.e. epithelioma cuniculatum) and the third patient had gluteal verrucous carcinoma with a cauliflower-like appearance. Clinically, the lesion of the first patient best resembled giant condyloma accuminatum without any prominent verrucous component, whereas the second patient showed a big deep ulcer on the heel. None of the patients had metastasis. The diagnosis was confirmed with biopsy and total excision was performed in all cases. Although the cases have different clinical presentations in different locations, we think that they should be considered as a single entity; that is, verrucous carcinoma.Öğe The treatment of melasma with hydroquinone and hydroquinone, retinoic acid and corticosteroid combination(1995) Senol M.; Ozcan A.; Hazneci E.; Dogan G.Background and design. - For the purpose of comparing the efficacy of hydroquinone alone or a combination (with retinoic acid and corticosteroid) in the treatment of melasma, two groups of patients were studied. Results. - Hydroquinone and combination therapy were used for three months in each group (20 patients). There was no significant difference between the efficacy and the side effects of the two therapy schedule. Conclusion. - We concluded that hydroquinone alone is sufficient in the treatment of melasma because of its economic and practical properties.Öğe Tuberculin reaction and Koebner's phenomenon with tuberculin test in patients with psoriasis: A controlled study(2003) Hazneci E.; Do?an G.Background and design: We aimed to investigate the tuberculin reactions in psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers vaccinated with BCG. The difference between with the lesional and non-lesional skin was observed in psoriasis patients. Beside we assessed whether elicitation of tuberculin injection may be superior to trauma in inducing psoriasis lesions (Koebner's phenomenon). Materials and method: Twenty-five patients with psoriasis and 25 healthy volunteers participated in the study. All participants had been vaccinated with BCG before. Tuberculin solution was injected intradermally to healthy volunteers' skin, and psoriatic and non-psoriatic skin of psoriasis patients. Same amount of saline control solution was injected intradermally to the non-lesional skin of psoriasis patients. Subjects were re-examined at 72nd hours for tuberculin reactions, and at 1st, 2nd, 4th weeks for any developed new psoriasis lesion. Results: There was no statistically difference between the groups for Tuberculin reaction sizes (p=0.244). When lesional and non-lesional skin areas were compared in psoriatic patients, the reaction was found as decreased in lesional skin; also the difference was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: The tuberculin reactions in psoriatic patients are not different from healthy persons. But, the reaction is weaker at psoriasis lesions than normal skin in the same patient. Tuberculin injection is not effective in inducing Koebner's phenomenon in psoriasis.Öğe Two cases of acrokeratoelastoidosis: Failure of acitretin treatment(1996) Dogan G.; Oram Y.; Hazneci E.; Muezzinoglu B.; Aydin A.Acrokeratoelastoidosis (AKE) is a rare distinguished clinical entity among other papular acrokeratodermas. It is characterized by smooth shiny papules on the hands and feet. We present two unrelated cases of AKE with typical clinical and histologic findings. The clinical diagnosis was confirmed with histopathologic findings, particularly, fragmentation and rarefaction of elastic fibers in the dermis. In the treatment of AKE, 3 months of acitretin administration (0.5 mg/kg/d) was found ineffective. Its treatment is still unsatisfactory and needs further therapeutic trials.Öğe Two cases of severe familial ochronotic arthropathy(2006) Elmali N.; Esenkaya I.; Türkmen E.; Hazneci E.Ochronotic spondylarthropathy, a long-term musculoskeletal manifestation of alkaptonuria and involvement of joints may lead to a radiographic appearance similar to that of degenerative joint disease. We report the cases of two siblings with progressive familial ochronotic arthropaty treated with total hip arthroplasty. © Springer-Verlag 2005.
