Öğe The effects of Gingko biloba extract on acetic acid-induced colitis in rats(2006) Harputluo?lu M.M.M.; Demirel U.; Yücel N.; Karada? N.; Temel I.; Firat S.; Ara C.Background/aims: Gingko biloba is an antioxidant substance which has antagonistic activity on platelet-activating factor. We aimed to investigate the antioxidant effect and the histopathologic changes caused by Gingko biloba on acetic acid-induced colitis. Methods: Totally 22 rats were divided into three groups. Group 1 (n=7) served as the control group. Group 2 (n=7) and Group 3 (n=8) were given 2 ml/day of 4% acetic acid by intracolonic instillation for three days. Gingko biloba (100 mg/kg) was then given only to Group 3 intraperitoneally for three days. Oxidative stress was assessed by determinate tissue and serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and colonic damage was assessed by histologic examination. Results: Depth of necrosis, extent of necrosis, degree of inflammation, extent of inflammation, fibrosis and total histologic scores in Group 2 were significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.05). The same parameters were lower in Group 3 versus Group 2, but the difference was not significant. Tissue and serum MDA levels in Group 2 were significantly higher than Group 1 (p<0.01 and 0.05, respectively). Again, the same parameters in Group 3 were lower than in Group 2, but the difference was not significant statistically. Conclusions: Gingko biloba did not significantly affect histopathological and oxidative stress parameters in experimental colitis.Öğe Evaluation of protective effects of verapamil against lens epithelial tissue injury induced by irradiation in rats(Turkish Pharmacists Association, 2010) Batçio?lu K.; Erkal H.S.; SerIn M.; Uyumlu A.B.; Yücel N.; Yildirim B.; Satilmiş B.In this study, we investigated the possible protectant effects of verapamil against lens epithelial tissue injury induced by irradiation in rats. Forty female Wistar Albino rats were divided into four groups (n=10). Group 1 received 10 mg/kg verapamil and underwent 20 Gy irradiation. Group 2 received no verapamil and underwent 20 Gy irradiation. Group 3 received 10 mg/kg verapamil and underwent sham irradiation. Group 4 received no verapamil and underwent sham irradiation. The lens tissues were dissected and measured malondialdehyde levels in all groups. The mean malondialdehyde levels (nmol/mg prt) were determined as 5,59 for Group 1, 7,04 for Group 2, 3,95 for Group 3 and 3,25 for Group 4. In conclusion, we can suggest that verapamil as a protectant agent against radiation induced lens epithelial tissue injury.Öğe Intensive care admission in patients with hellp syndrome in a tertiary referral hospital(SpringerOpen, 2015) Gedik E.; Yücel N.; Sahin T.; Koca E.; Çolak Y.Z.; Togal T.[No abstract available]Öğe The reasons of childhood mortality between 1996-2002 in Malatya(2006) U?raş M.; Yakinci C.; Güneş G.; Yücel N.Mortality statistics are easy to provide, so are widely used to show child health status in the population. Previous studies have shown that, graveyard recordings are reliable to evaluate childhood deaths. We documented the number and reasons of childhood deaths during 1995-2002 in Malatya city, and compared these findings with childhood deaths between 1990-1995. One month-1 year old childhood deaths made up 35.65% of general population mortality, while newborn death was 22.61%, 1 to 6-year-old death was 21.55%, 11 to 18 year-old death was 14.88 and 7 to 11 year-old death was 5.34%. In the present study, childhood deaths constituted 13.82% of whole deaths. In the last 7 years, there was a striking decrease in newborn deaths and deaths between 7-11 years-old children. Prematurity and its complications, including respiratory problems, pneumonia and cerebral problems, were the most common reasons of newborn deaths. We suggest there are some reasons for the decrease in newborn deaths: a) Families became more conscious and refer to a health care unit as their babies get ill. b) improvement in the quality of newborn care units in our city c) babies are delivered in hospitals even in villages. The increase of deaths in 1 month-1 year, 1-6 year and 11-18 year-old groups is attributed to infant infection(pneumonia and diarrhea being the most common reasons), and accidents. As doctors have a leading role for the public to be conscious about prevention and coping with diseases and preventible accidents. In a country like Turkey with high children mortality rates both public doctors and pediatricians have too much to do.
