This study has been conducted for the purpose of examining the effect of music on pain in the postoperative stage. This research january 2013- january 2014 between was conducted at the Medical Center General Surgery İntensive Care Unit (ICU) of Turgut Özal İnönü University as a quasi-experimental research with pretest-posttest designs. The study population consisted of patients who were hospitalized in ICU in the first 24 hours after surgery, accepted to participate in the study and were aged 18 and older. The sample group consisted of selected with random sampling 180 patients who stayed in ICU after the power analysis (90 test, 90 control). This research data June 2013 - September 2013 were collected between. Patient identification forms and visual analog scales (VAS) were used for data collection. Patient identification form was applied to the patients in the experimental group, their pain level was determined with the VAS and after that they were exposed to music for 30 minutes. When the music stopped, their pain level was determined again using the VAS. Whereas in the control group, the patient identification form was used, their pain level was determined with the VAS and taking into consideration the end of the music concert applied to the experimental group, their pain level was reevaluated in the 30th minute. Data were evaluated with percentage, arithmetic average, chi-square test and independent groups t test. The research result showed that owing to the effect of music the pain level of the experimental group decreased from 6.74±1.91 to 5.18±2.20 (p= .00). Hence this result suggests the effectiveness of music on pain in the postoperative phase.
