Psychological adaption on the students who are in two different primary schools which have different socioeconomics conditions in Malatya province

Objective: Psychological adaptation problems appear as results of developmental period difficulties of childhood and negative external environmental factors. The aim of this study is to evaluate the psychological adaptation levels of the students who are in two primary schools, located in two different regions of the city which have different socioeconomic conditions in Malatya province. Methods: This study was carried out at November 2000 - December 2001 in Malatya province. Totally 876 students, 490 students in 4-8 classes who have high socio economic conditions from Gazi Primary School (GPS) and 386 students in 4-8 classes who have low sbcioeconomics conditions from Hanimin Ciftligi Primary School (HCPS) included to study. Socio-demographic information form and Hacettepe Psychological Adaptation Scale (HPAS) used in order to evaluate the psychological adaptation of the sudents. Statistical analysis was evaluated with Khi square and Mann Whitney U tests. Results: HPAS point was found 9.75±6.13 in GPS and 9.68±6.36 in HCPS. There was no statistically significant difference among the HPAS points, between the schools (p>0.05). Prevalence of stammer, enuresis nocturna and the failure at school were high in HCPS, prevalence of nail biting was high in GPS (p<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference among prevalence of tic, finger suction and encopresis between the schools (p>0.05). Discussion: Although this data is insufficient to evaluation of relationship between socioeconomic conditions and psychological adaptation, it emphasize that to improve socioeconomic conditions is important for protection psychological health and to improve healthy ways of psychological adaptation of children.
