Özet

This study intends to determine the self-care ability of the patients in neurosurgery service and to evaluate the efficacy of nurses' tutor role in enhancing patients' self-care ability. This quasi-experimental study is conducted using a pretest-posttest design. The participants of the study comprise 40 voluntary patients meeting the requirements of the study who were hospitalized in neurosurgery department at Inonu University Turgut Ozal Medical Centre between May and September of 2005. Data were collected using a "Self-Care Ability Scale" designed by researchers which includes 16 items about socio-demographic characteristics of the patients. The data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, variance analysis, and t-test. While the average self-care ability score (SCAS) was 62.90±14.61 before training, it was found 73.90±15.53 after training. The difference was statistically significant (t=-3.70, p< 0.05). It was concluded that nursing and training offered to patients in neurosurgery service helped to increase the self-care ability among patients and therefore improved the quality of life.
