Özet

The first issue of Ab? H?mid al-Ghaz?l?’s (d. 505/1111) Tah?fut al-Fal?sifa concerns the eternity of the world. This issue consists of four arguments defended by the fal?sifa for the eternity of the world, along with a debate on these arguments. The second argument, known as the argument from time, is distinguished by its use of the concept of time to reach the conclusion that the world is eternal. In Tah?fut al-Fal?sifa, two different forms of this argument are presented. In the second form of the argument from time, the relationship between possibility and time is brought to the fore, and it is concluded that time is eternal based on the possibility of the world’s existence. In this debate, structured as a dialogue between al-Ghaz?l? and the fal?sifa, the fal?sifa argue that the possibility of the existence of other worlds before a contingent world would lead to the existence of time before the world. In contrast, al-Ghaz?l? puts forward possible objections that argue that the existence of this possibility does not necessitate the existence of time. This article concludes that the criticisms directed at the second form of the time argument in Tah?fut al-Fal?sifa provide data that casts doubt on the soundness of the argument and that the argument is insufficient to prove the eternity of the world. © 2024 Ankara University, Journal of the Faculty of Divinity.
