Özet
Ocaks, as religious institutions, have been organized in the form of a network in Anatolia and Balkans. They have reached to present day with a history dating back to hundreds of years. Notwithstanding that their basis is formed by religion, ocaks have performed a wide range of functions for social life. In addition to the institution of the religion, they have performed important functions in some institutional areas such as morality, law, politics and economics. The ocak institution, which was effective especially in rural areas, has undergone a loss of function in parallel with the process of modernization and urbanization. Although it has lost some of its functions, this institution continues its existence nowadays. Also, it might be said that the foundation of ocak has undergone a transformation at the point of answering the problems created by the modernity. In this context, within the framework of functional analysis, contents and functions of the ocak institution showing parallelism with the functions and features of the institutions in general will be emphasized in the article. The functions of the ocaks as a social institution will be examined in the historical process considering the village-city differentiation. Thus, it is aimed to determine the functional differentiation and change as well. Especially, this article will try to examine the effect of modernization on ocaks and their functions.
