Abstract
The main purpose of this research is to examine that which words' meanings are not known by the secondary school students and if these words are showing a significant difference according to gender and class level variables. For this purpose two texts, one is narrative and other is informative, were given to students to underline unknown words. The study was performed at survey model and purposeful stratified was used in sampling method. Data were obtained from 184 fifth and sixth grade students attend to school in Malatya. Totally, students do not know the meaning of the 74 different words, the unknown words are determined as 5.84 average. It's seen that class level and gender statistically do not have a significant effect about unknown words number. It has significantly found that sixth class students have less unknown foreign language origin words due to fifth class students.
