Ancak bu kavram, Marx onu yazılarında kullanana kadar çoğunlukla geri planda kalmıştır. Marx'ın bu kavramı kullanmasıyla birlikte, toplumsal sınıf kavramı, birçok sosyal bilimcinin de dikkatini çekmiştir.
