Objective: Autism begins in early childhood with impairment in social interaction and communication and affect all areas of dev lopment lifetime. This study aims to determine what proportion of children with autism is diagnosed and referred to services by their pediatrician. Material and Methods: At Ankara University School of Medicine Child Psychiatry Department, files of children diagnosed with autism were retrospectively examined for referral sour ce. Next, in another cohort of children with autism, families were interviewed about pediatrician's role in diagnosis and referral. Results: Record review revealed that of the 468 children diagnosed with autism, 275 (58.8%) were followed regularly by the same pediatrician and of the se, 4% were diagnosed and referred for services. Interviewed families of 125 children reported that their pediatrician recognized autism symptoms in 14 (11.2%) children. Conclusion: This research shows that the doctors specializing in childhood diseases are not equipped with skills to recognize the autistic symptoms and refer the families. It is important to include the early diagnosis and the treatment of developmental problems in the training of doctors working with children. Copyright © 2010 by Türkiye Klinikleri.
