dc.description.abstractAim: The objective of this study is to determine the beliefs on weight, body image and weight control and to describe weight control methods that male and female students in high schools use. Material and Method: This is a cross-sectional study completed at the high schools in Malatya city. Six hundred-fifty-eight students were sampled using a stratified random sampling method. A self-completed questionnaire including questions about demographic variables, beliefs about weight, weight control and body image and behaviors and methods used for weight control. Results: Only 44.5% of the girls and 43.5% of the boys were satisfied with their weight; 39.9% of the girls and 18.1% of the boys had attempted to lose weight the previous year: 81.5% of the students had used exercise and 53.2% had used diet. 29.6% of males and 19.3% of females had used unhealthy and dangerous methods such as diuretics, laxatives, weight loss drugs, weight loss powders and teas and self induced vomiting. Conclusions: Most students presented negative attitudes towards obesity and overweight people. Regular and continuous educational programs on nutrition should be arranged in schools for healthy dietary behaviors. (Turk Arch Ped 2010; 45: 41-8)en_US
