Cities have been the areas where cultures and civilizations were developed in the eras. Cities having begun to be founded after humans adapted to sedentary had historical identities facing geographical, sociological and cultural events. Cities' identities are very important in today's cities where especially similar structures are present in great majority and it is known that the effect of historical environments is large on urban identity. The city of Malatya is in a rapid changing process. As a result of the process, traditional structure of the city has also been distorted. In the research area, 14 traditional houses have remained in a residential area and they have not been adapted to the new living conditions. The study is to determine how historical urban structure reflecting socio-cultural characteristics of a society can be transformed into modern life by making it a livable attraction centre. In the study, the daily and regular users of the Beşkonak Street of the Malatya City were surveyed through the use of a face to face questionnaire technique. It has been circulated through 124 volunteer daily users and 85 volunteer regular users in May and June 2011 to learn residential awareness on the cities' identities and historical values, and to learn their recommendation to improve cities' identities and qualities. The aim of the study develops a guiding approach and method to be used for creating areas which satisfy users by considering the evaluations of both experts and users in conservation, planning and design of historical structures. In this perspective, landscape perception has been evaluated in only visual and physical extents in the study.en_US
