A STUDY ON PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED DURING FIELD RESEARCH: THE CASE OF ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

Özet
Field research, referred to in foreign literature as field work or field research, is applicable across where qualitative or quantitative data collection from the field is required. Field research, in the discipline of ethnomusicology, is a data collection tool conducted with a focus on particularly interview and participant observation techniques, with the aim of examining the musical culture and practices specific to a particular region. While field research provides advantages in obtaining original data, it also introduces challenges that vary depending on the dynamics of the cultural and social structures where the research is conducted. The primary aim of this study is to systematically examine potential problems encountered during ethnomusicological field research and to develop solutions to address these issues. It is anticipated that this approach will provide a guiding resource for researchers, thus contributing to the efficiency, sustainability, validity, and reliability of future research activities. Economic Problems, Time Problems, Communication Problems, Climate Problems and Other Problems are at the top of the list of findings. This study seeks to identify possible challenges that researchers may face in conducting ethnomusicological field research more effectively and discusses potential solutions to these issues. The outputs obtained within this context contain the research findings. Employing a literature review and document analysis case study approach, the study emphasizes the importance of researchers’ developing flexible organizational structures and utilizing alternative data collection techniques to manage affectively complex problems. Through these strategies, it is concluded that it is possible to enhance the efficiency of ethnomusicological field research even under challenging field conditions without compromising ethical principles. © 2025, Tolga Karaca.
