Sofistler ile birlikte ortaya çıktığı düşünülen şüphe kavramı, hem Doğuda hem de Batıda çalışmalara fazlaca konu olan bir kavram olmuştur. İslam âlimlerinden Gazzâlî, modern felsefe temsilcilerinden ise Descartes konu ile ilgili son derece önemli çalışmalar yapmış ve eserler bırakmışlardır. Gazzâlî duyular ve akıl yoluyla elde ettiğimiz bilgilerin bizleri yanıltabileceğinden şüphelenerek yola çıkmış ve uzun süre şüphe krizleri yaşamıştır. Şüphesinin zirvesine ulaştıktan sonra şüphe edilemeyecek tek şeyin Tanrı'nın varlığı olduğu fikrine ulaşmıştır. Descartes de Gazzâlî gibi döneminin şüphecilerinden olmuş ve şüphesini matematiğin verilerinden ve Tanrı'nın varlığından şüphe edecek kadar ileriye götürmüştür. Şüphesinin sonunda kendi varlığından hareketle gerçek, sınırsız ve sonsuz bir Tanrı'nın varlığı gerçeğine ulaşmıştır. Bu çalışma, Gazzâlî ve Descartes'in şüphe kavramını ne şekilde ele aldıkları kapsamlı bir şekilde incelenerek, benzerlikleri ve farklılıkları ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. The scepticism, which is thought to have emerged with the Sophists, has become a subject widely studied in both the East and West. Al-Ghazali, one of the most prominent Islamic scholars, and Descartes, one of the representatives of modern philosophy, carried out many valuable studies on the subject and presented published works. Having suspected that the information obtained by senses and reason might mislead people, Al-Ghazali went through a crisis of scepticism for a long time. After reaching the peak of his scepticism, he found out that the only thing that could not be doubted was the existence of God. Like Al-Ghazali, Descartes became one of the sceptics of his time and took his scepticism far enough to doubt the data of mathematics and the existence of God. As a result of his sceptical development and considering his own essence, Descartes came to realise the real truth: the existence of a true, boundless, and eternal God. This study aims to make how Al-Ghazali and Descartes valued the scepticism as well as revealing similarities and differences in their notions of scepticism.
