Öğe Aminoguanidine prevents ototoxicity induced by cisplatin in rats(Ann Clin Lab Sci, 2005) Iraz, Mustafa; Kalcıoğlu, Mahmut Tayyar; Kızılay, Ahmet; Karataş, ErkanCisplatin (CDDP) is one of the most potent antineoplastic drugs, but its therapeutic use is limited by side effects such as ototoxicity. This study tested the effect of aminoguanidine (AG), a specific inhibitor of inducible nitric oxide synthase, on CDDP ototoxicity. Female Wistar albino rats were randomly assigned to 4 groups: saline controls (n = 7), CDDP (n = 7), CDDP plus AG (n = 7), and AG (n = 7). Rats in the CDDP group received a single injection of cisplatin (16 mg/kg, ip). Rats in the CDDP plus AG group received aminoguanidine (20 mg/kg, ip) twice daily on the day before and on 5 consecutive days after a single injection of CDDP (16 mg/kg, ip). Rats in the AG group received aminoguanidine (20 mg/ kg, ip) twice daily for 6 days. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were elicited from the control and experimental animals utilizing a standard commercial otoacoustic emissions apparatus. DPOAEs were measured in the rats on day 0, prior to any drug administration, and on day 5. The initial baseline distortion product diagrams (DPgram) and input/output (I/O) function measurements gave similar results in all 4 groups. On day 5, there was significant deterioration of the DPgrams and I/O functions in the CDDP group; no significant changes of DPgrams and I/O functions were observed on day 5 in the other 3 groups. The median amplitudes of DPgrams and I/O functions revealed significant differences between the CDDP group and the other 3 groups. These results suggest that AG had a preventive effect against CDDP ototoxicity. In summary, this study indicates that AG prevents the cochlear dysfunction and hearing loss induced in rats by a single dose of CDDP.Öğe Atipik Meniere Hastalığı: Ani İşitme Kaybı Olarak Tedavi Edilen Olgu Sunumu(İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Dergisi, 2012) Bayındır, Tuba; Karataş, Erkan; Çetinkaya, ZekeriyaMeniere hastalığı, fluktuan, başlangıçta düşük sonradan tüm frekansları tutan sensörinöral tip işitme kaybı, tinnitus, aural dolgunluk ve tekrarlayan vertigo atakları ile karakterize bir iç kulak hastalığıdır. A case with major features of mild conductive hearing loss, with hyperteleorism, cleft soft palate, hand and foot abnormalities is presented. The evaluation of the auditory functions of case was performed by objective and subjective hearing tests with radiological findings of temporal bone. Hearing aids were prescribed for both ears for the mild conductive hearing loss. The patient remained in good health for three years.Öğe Auricular calcification: Case report of petrified ears in awoman(2021) Özer Öztürk, Ebru; Karataş, ErkanAuricular calcification (Petrified ears) is one of the rare diagnoses in ENT outpatient clinics. Although auricular calcification isoften asymptomatic and does not require treatment, it is a critical diagnosis since it may develop secondary to life-threateningendocrinopathies. A 33-year-old female patient was admitted to our clinic with increasing stiffening in both auricles for one year. Onphysical examination, bilateral tympanic membranes, external auditory canals, and auriculas had a natural appearance. Apart fromlobules, the bilateral auricle had lost its elasticity. Computed tomography of the temporal bones showed bilateral calcification ofauriculas and external auditory canals with normal soft-tissue density of the overlying subcutaneous tissues. In our study, a patientwho was followed up due to pituitary insufficiency, and she has complained about the progressive loss of elasticity in both auricleswas discussed.Öğe Bilateral Dev Boyun Kitlesine Neden Olan Saçlı Deri Skuamöz Hücreli Kanserin Yetersiz Eksizyonu(2013) Toplu, Yüksek; Can, Şermin; Bayındır, Tuba; Karataş, Erkan; Kızılay, AhmetBaş ve boyun skuamöz hücre karsinomlu hastalarda uzak metastaz görülme sıklığı nispeten düşüktür. Methods: 29 patients with unilateral complete ChT section and 29 healthy subjects with identical ages, genders, and weights to the patient group were examined ultrasonographically. The patients having a mean duration to follow-up examination of 32 months (2 /84 months) were subdivided into two groups by their time to follow-up as short-term patient group (2 /12 months, 14 patients) and long-term patient group (13 /84 months, 15 patients). The ultrasonographic dimensions and volumes of submandibular glands were compared statistically between the groups. Results: In the patient group, the glands on the contralateral, non-operated side were found to be greater than the ipsilateral, denervated glands in terms of both paramandibular depth dimension (P B/0.05) and volume (P B/0.01). The differences could be determined only in long-term patient group. When comparing the submandibular glands of the patient group with those of the control group, it was found that paramandibular depth dimension and volume of the submandibular glands on the contralateral, non-operated side were statistically greater (P B/0.01). There was no difference between submandibular glands on the operated side of the patient group and those of the control group (P /0.05). Conclusion: The late (13 /84 months) biometric results of ChT damage on submandibular gland were significant for increase in the size of the contralateral, non-denervated submandibular gland. An atrophying effect was not ascertained in the submandibular glands denervated parasympathetically due to the section of the ChT.Öğe Effects of topical phenytoin on nasal wound healing after mechanical trauma An experimental study(The Laryngoscope, 2014) Şimşek, Gökçe; Çiftçi, Osman; Karadağ, Neşe; Karataş, Erkan; Kızılay, AhmetObjectives/Hypothesis: Impaired postoperative wound healing is the second most common morbidity after synechia formation in endoscopic sinus surgery. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the potential effects of topical phenytoin on wound healing after nasal mucosal trauma in rats. Study Design: An experimental study at the Inonu University Faculty of Medicine. Methods: Twenty-four rats were randomized into three groups: 1) phenytoin group (n 5 8), 2) control group (n 5 8), and 3) vehicle group (n 5 8). After damaging the right nasal cavity, in the phenytoin group, 1% topical phenytoin cream was applied for 7 days. The rats in the control group did not receive any treatment. The vehicle group was treated with daily topical cold cream for 1 week. The rats were sacrificed at the end, and the nasal cavities were excised. Tissue edema and inflammatory cell infiltration were compared among the groups. Additionally, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and cluster of differentiation 31 (CD31) immunoexpression levels were evaluated. Furthermore, in biochemical analysis, the tissue levels of vascular endothelial growth factor and (EGF) of the groups were investigated. Results: In the phenytoin group, tissue edema and inflammatory cell infiltration were significantly decreased, and PCNA and CD31 immunoexpression levels were more prominent (P <.001) and the tissue EGF levels were significantly higher (P <.01). Conclusions: Topical phenytoin treatment may alter the nasal wound healing after mechanical trauma. The potential beneficial effects of topical phenytoin on nasal mucosa should be investigated by further experimental and human trials.Öğe Giant concha bullosa pyocele: an unusual cause of rapidly developing nasal obstruction(İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Dergisi, 2014) Toplu, Yüksel; Bayındır, Tuba; Güllü, Serdar; Karataş, Erkan; Kızılay, AhmetKonka bülloza piyoseli nadir görülen bir hastalıktır ve konka bülloza enfeksiyonu sonucunda gelişir. In extremely rare conditions, it can appear in sphenoid bone, and only 2 cases have been described in literature until now. We present a case of lipoma in the body of the sphenoid bone mimicking sphenoid sinus tumor. A 16-year-old man presented to Department of Otorhinolaryngology with a complaint of nonspecific headache. There were any clinical findings on physical examination. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed and the diagnosis was made on these imaging findings. Other diagnostic technique, invasive histopathological assessment was not necessary. To our knowledge, this is the first case of lipoma in the body of the sphenoid bone with indentation to sphenoid sinus. The patient has been followed-up radiologically without the need for surgery for two years.Öğe Mastoid cerrahisi sonrası karşı sağlam kulakta tur gürültüsüne bağlı meydana gelen işitme kayıpları(İnönü Üniversitesi, 2003) Karataş, ErkanBir kulağı sağlam ve diğer kulağında mastoid cerrahisi gerektiren bir patolojisi olan hastalarda, operasyon sırasında kullanılan tur cihazından çıkan gürültünün, karşı sağlam kulakta oluşturduğu etkinin ve muhtemel işitme kaybının ortaya konulması, işitme kaybı gelişmişse bunun geçici veya kalıcı olup olmadığı, geçici ise de geri dönüş olup olmadığını araştırmak amaçlanmıştır.Bu çalışmaya mastoid cerrahisi planlanan ve diğer kulağı normal ve sağlam olan 22 olgu dahil edilmiştir. As its size increases the lesion expands out of the sinus. We reported a 16-year-old patient who presented with complaints such as left periorbital pain, shifting in the left eye and proptosis. Mucocele is most commonly seen in the frontal and ethmoid sinuses, while it is rare in the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses. We presented a case of maxillary sinüs mucocele with orbital complaints.Öğe Ophthalmoplegia secondary to left sphenoid sinus mucocele(2018) Karataş, Erkan; Demir, İsmail; Toplu, Yüksel; Yaslıkaya, SerhatAbstract: Sphenoid sinus mucocele (SSM) is rare and constitutes 1-2% of all paranasal sinus mucoceles. In general, patients present with symptoms such as headache, swelling of the face, nasal obstruction, proptosis, disturbance of globe movements, diplopia and visual loss. In this article, we present a case of ophthalmoplegia which is diagnosed with rare SSM. A 72-year-old man was admitted with an upper respiratory tract infection and concomitant complaints of low left eye lid, diplopia and retroorbital headache. On examination, there were left ptosis and paralysis in all globe movements except for the outward gaze. The patient’s diplopia increased in downward gaze. Fundoscopy was normal. CT revealed a hypodense mass in the left sphenoid sinus that was compatible with a mucocele of about 3x2 cm. The patient was diagnosed with SSM and we performed emergency surgery. Sphenoid sinus mucoceles are very rare and benign lesions, but they can permanently damage the surrounding vital structures. Patients with headache and cranial nerve pathologies should be suspected of SSM. Surgical treatment of SSM by transnasal endoscopic approach can be preferred because of its ease of application and low morbidity and recurrence rates. Early surgical intervention can prevent the damages that will develop in patients.Öğe The protective effect of erdosteine against ototoxicity induced by cisplatinin rats(Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol, 2005) Kalcıoğlu, Mahmut Tayyar; Kızılay, Ahmet; Güleç, Mukaddes; Karataş, Erkan; Iraz, Mustafa; Akyol, Ömer; Eğri, Mücahit; Özturan, OrhanThe elimination of cisplatin ototoxicity is an ongoing concern. This experimental study was undertaken to investigate the effect of oral erdosteine in ameliorating cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Twenty-eight adult female Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four equal groups. Group A received an oral carrier vehicle of the drug erdosteine with 0.2 ml of 0.9% saline. Group B was administered only erdosteine (per oral 10 mg/kg twice a day) for 6 days. Group C was injected with cisplatin intraperitoneally (i.p.) on day 0 (16 mg/kg body weight), once only. Group D was given erdosteine (per oral 10 mg/kg/day) 1 day before and for 5 days consecutively after cisplatin injection (16 mg/kg, i.p.). Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were elicited in different frequency regions, ranging from 1,001 to 6,299 Hz as DPgram and input/output (I/O) functions from the control and experimental animals. All experimental animals were killed under general anesthesia on day 5, following the last otoacoustic emission measurements. Prior to death, blood samples were drawn for measurement of superoxide dismutase, xanthine oxidase (XO), malondialdehyde and nitric oxide. Initial DPgram and I/O function baseline measurements were similar in all groups prior to any drug administration (P>0.05). On day 5, intra-subject measurement parameters of DPgrams and I/O functions in the cisplatin group showed significant deterioration (P <0.05). The other groups revealed no differences between their pre- and post-test drug administration DPgrams and I/O functions at any test frequency (P>0.05). Comparison of the amplitudes of DPgrams and I/O functions between the cisplatin and control groups showed significant changes (P <0.05). Biochemical studies noted an increased XO activity following cisplatin administration (P <0.007). The other biochemical results did not show significant differences between the study and control groups. This study demonstrates that, in rats, erdosteine is protective for cochlear function against the disruptive effects of cisplatin as measured by DPOAEs.Öğe The protective role of molsidomine on the cisplatin Induced ototoxicity(Indian Journal of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, 2014) Toplu, Yüksel; Parlakpınar, Hakan; Sapmaz, Emrah; Karataş, Erkan; Polat, Alaattin; Kızılay, AhmetThis experimental study was designed to investigate the protective effects of molsidomine (MOL) on against cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (CIO). To examine this effect, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) measurements and serum levels of oxidative and antioxidant status [including malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and oxidative stress index (OSI)] were evaluated. Thirty-two female wistar albino rats were divided into four groups including; control (Group K), cisplatin (Group C), cisplatin plus MOL group (Group CM), and MOL group (Group M). DPOAEs measurements between 0.9961 and 8.0003 Hz as DP-gram and input/output (I/O) functions were performed in the same (left) ear of all rats on days 0, 1st, 5th and 12th. Prior to death, the last DPOAEs measurements and blood samples were taken. In the C group, statistically significant DPOAE amplitude reductions were detected at 2.5195, 3.1758, 3.9961, 5.0391, 6.3516 and 8.0039 Hz frequencies (p\0.05) between 0th and 1st, 0th and 5th and 0th and 12th days’ measurements (p\0.05). Serum level of MDA, TAC and OSI levels were significantly higher in the C group versus K group (p\0.05). In the CM group, there were no significant differences at all frequencies between 0th and other days’ measurements (p[0.05) and the serum levels of all biochemical parameters were shifted toward normal values, similar to the K group (p\0.05). No significant differences were detected in the either M or K group’s measurements. According to these results, cisplatin-related ototoxicity has been significantly prevented by MOL.Öğe A rare cause of vertigo: cryoglobulinaemia(Turgut Özal Tıp Merkezi Dergisi, 2016) Karataş, Erkan; Koca, Çiğdem Fırat; Aydın, Şükrü; Toplu, Yüksel; Taşkapan, HülyaAbstract Cryoglobulinaemia should be taken into consideration as a cause of vertigo.
