An epidemiological study was carried out to determine the prevalence of prostatism symptoms in males between 35-85 years of age in Yesilyurt town, Malatya. Five hundred and seven males with a mean age of 55, chosen by 50 % systematic sampling, were enrolled in this study. Prevalence of prostatism was determined as 17.8 % according to Modified Boyarski Symptom Score. Nocturia 49.5 %, intermittency. Among these patients 49.5 % had symptoms of nocturia, 28.2% had intermittency, 24.1% had dysuria, 23.1% had weak urinary outflow, 21.9 had frequency, 19.3% had urgency, 18.9% had postvoid dribbling, 10.5% had hesitancy and 7.1 had postvoiding residual urine feeling. No statistical significance was determined between age groups concerning dysuria and frequency ( p>0.05). Other symptoms and total symptom score were increased in patients aged 55 years or older ( p>0.05). As a result, prostatism symptoms were identified as important health problems because of their effects on the quality of life. Physicians working at primary health centers and urology specialists must work in cooperation in order to reduce the morbidity and complications of BPH.
