Due to the decrease in bauxite reserves suitable for the Bayer process, production of alumina from non-bauxite sources is becoming increasingly important today. In this study, production of alumina from pumice, which has high reserves in Türkiye, by acid leaching was investigated. Pumice sample containing 64.64% SiO2 and 14.85% Al2O3 was leached with water, HCl, H2SO4 and HNO3 solutions and aluminum could not be recovered in any medium. To activate it mechanically, the pumice was intensively milled in a planetary ball mill at different times in the range of 2-60 minutes. Intensively milled pumice samples were leached in different acid solutions under identical conditions and 66.40% of aluminum was recovered using 60 min. milled pumice sample leached by HCl. For increasing the aluminum recovery, effects of time, acid concentration and temperature were investigated. Thus, the aluminum recovery increased to 91.37% by leaching in 4 M HCl solution, at boiling temperature and in 24 hours. AlCl3 salt was precipitated from this pregnant leaching solution by evaporation method, then the salt was roasted at 1200°C for 3 hours and a pumice alumina with 62.87% Al2O3 content was produced for the first time. Although there are iron, calcium, magnesium and titanium in the alümina as impurities, it was shown that by applying a sequential process including mechanical activation, acid leaching, precipitation and roasting, alumina can be produced from pumice. © 2022 Union of Chambers of Engineers and Architects of Turkey.
