Background and design. - In recent years, itraconazole and terbinafine have been widely used in the treatment of superficial fungal diseases. In this study, we aimed to compare the efficacy and side effects of these 2 agents. Seventy eight patients with superficial dermatophyte infection, were given either itraconazol (100 mg/d) or terbinafine (250 mg/d) for two weeks. The efficacy of the treatment was evaluated by KOH examination at 30th, 60th and 90th day after cessation of the drug. Side effect profile was decided with patients' complaints and laboratory examinations. Results. - At the end of the study 30 of 39 patients in the itraconazole group and 31 of 39 patients in the terbinafine group, completed the study. There was no statistical difference between the two treatment groups regarding the efficacy of the treatment. Conclusion. - None of the patients described any subjective side effects and all laboratory examination results were either negative or normal. Itraconazole and terbinafine were found to be equally effective in superficial dermatophyte infections.en_US
