Özet
Dil, çocuğu içinde yaşadığı dünyaya entegre eden ve onun hayata tutunmasını sağlayan en önemli unsurlardan
biridir. Birey doğduğu andan itibaren ağlamayla başlayan iletişim kurma sürecinde seri ve anlamlı cümlelerin
oluşması ile büyük bir aşama kaydeder. Ancak çocuklar açısından gelişimsel olarak en önemli unsurlardan biri
olan dilin gelişimi özel gereksinimlerinden dolayı farklı gelişim gösteren çocuklarda kesintiye uğramakta ya da
geride kalmaktadır. Gelişim süreci içerisinde çocuklar doğuştan ya da sonradan ortaya çıkan çeşitli nedenlerle dil
gelişimi sürecinde problemler yaşarlar. Bu unsurlar arasında down sendromu çocukların çok boyutlu gelişimini
etkileyen önemli faktörlerden biridir. Çalışmada down sendromlu çocukların dil gelişim süreci ile normal gelişim
gösteren çocukların dil gelişim sürecindeki farklılıklar ve bu alanda yapılmış araştırmaların bulguları tartışılmıştır.
Down sendromluların dil gelişiminde normal gelişim gösteren yaşıtlarına göre belirgin bir şekilde sorunlar
yaşandığı belirtilmektedir. Down sendromlu çocukların gelişim sürecinde özellikle dil gelişimi alanında
yaşadıkları sorunların tanımlanması önemlidir. Bu tanımlama erken çocukluk döneminde uzmanların ve
ebeveynlerin çocuklarının iletişim becerilerini desteklemeleri ve down sendromlu çocuklarin erken müdehale
programlarıyla dil gelişimini destekleyici bir eğitim almalarına katkı sağlayacaktır.

Language is one of the most important elements that integrates a child into the world she or he lives in and enables her or him to hold on to life. Formation of serial and meaningful sentences helps children make a great progress in the process of establishing communication, which starts with crying as from birth. However, the development of language, which is one of the most important elements for the development of children, is either interrupted or falls behind in children showing a different development due to their special needs. In the process of development, children experience problems with their language development due to various reasons that are either innate or emerge afterwards. Among these elements, down syndrome is one of the important factors affecting multidimensional development of children. In the study, differences in language development process of children with down syndrome and language development process of children displaying a normal development as well as findings of relevant studies were discussed. It is indicated that children with down syndrome experience distinctive problems in their language development, compared to their peers showing a normal development. It is important to define problems experienced by children with down syndrome in the process of development, especially in the area of language development. This definition will contribute to experts and parents to support communication skills of children in early childhood period and children with down syndrome to receive a training that would support their language development via early intervention programs.
