Investigation of complementary and alternative therapy methods used by patients with lumber disc hernia for low back pain

Aim of the study was to determine the complementary and alternative therapy (CAT) methods used by patients with lumber disc hernia to relieve the low back pain. This is a descriptive and cross-sectional study. Sample of study included in patients with lumber disc hernia (n=105) who have been hospitalized for treatment date between March 01, 2006 and February 28, 2007. Data were collected by using a questionnaire and were analyzed by using descriptive statistical methods, and the percentage rates were computed. The mean age of the all patients was 46.34±11.32 years, and those mostly were female (84.3 %, n=89). About 65 % of patients have had the low back pain over three years. It was found that 33.3 % (n=35) of participants used at least one form of CAT methods for low back pain in the last 12 months. Plaster applying on back, cold applying and massage were the most commonly used of the methods for low back pain. Also, it was found that only 28.6 % (n=10) of patients asked opinion from physician before they used CAT methods. Results of this study show that the health workers should be give knowledge to individuals related to choosing and using of CAT methods.
